From 16 to 19 January, new digital solutions and tools for energy efficiency database management have been introduced to nearly 100 energy experts from national and provincial governments and local companies in two trainings on “Utilization of the National Energy Efficiency Database”. Organized in Hanoi and Vung Tau, the trainings are part of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (4E) Project, which is implemented by the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

At the trainings, participants are introduced to the Energy Efficiency Database for Key Energy Users and the reporting procedure. Local experts also provide guidance on new tools for submitting data and reports on the national energy efficiency database platform http://dataenergy.vn/ and present the latest updates on the government’s regulations on energy efficiency.

“Industrial sectors account for 47% of total country’s energy consumption. Therefore, developing and maintaining a good energy database of industrial companies is essential, as it will help the government organizations to have an overview about major energy consumers and provides insights for planning and energy policy development. The new tools and functions introduced will support the local authorities in monitoring and evaluation of energy saving potentials and make it easier and simpler for companies to submit data and statistics”, says Mr. Markus Bissel, GIZ’s energy consultant at the training.

As one of the most dynamically growing economies in Asia, Viet Nam faces an enormous increase in energy demand that will continue to grow at double-digit rates in the coming years.  With regards to energy consumption, industry, transportation and residential areas are the three biggest electricity consuming sectors, which accounts for 47%, 15% and 30% respectively (*).

According to statistics, the country has high energy saving potential which is 30% across sectors. The government of Viet Nam is strongly committed to increase energy efficiency. In 2016, in the revised Power Development Plan VII, the government set a national target on energy efficiency of up to 10% saving of total electricity consumption for the period 2016 – 2020.
