Green energy – core value for sustainable development

Green energy certification is emerging as an indispensable factor for comprehensive and modern sustainable development as Vietnam and other economies are trying to unlock vast, low-cost energy resources.

The demand for innovative, climate-friendly technologies and energy efficiency is increasing enormously, as it offers sustainable growth for the whole economy. With this in mind, Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade’s Industrial Promotion and Development Consultancy Centre (Hanoi IDC), with assistance from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH under the framework of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (4E) project, has introduced the Green Energy Model to improve energy efficiency across various industries and major buildings in Hanoi.

The programme aims to boost the application of high technologies, automation, and innovation in equipment related to energy, develop energy efficiency indicators, as well as promote green energy. This will also contribute to the green economy and sustainable development while enhancing competitiveness and promoting international integration.

This sustainable initiative targets to boost digitally-enabled applications and innovation in energy-related sectors, along with developing crucial energy efficiency indicators. Sustainable green energy would be a critical factor to create competitive advantages for the domestic economy, so it is of utmost importance for all related parties to strengthen these efforts. Programme participants include large energy users which are facilities that use energy in industrial production with total consumption of 300-1,000 TOE (equivalent to 2-6.5 million kWh per year). Others are major energy users which are facilities with annual energy consumption equivalent to 1,000 TOE or more for industrial production facilities, or 500 TOE or more for buildings under construction, and buildings which are construction works under operation or renovation with a total floor area of at least 2,500 square metres.

The programme evaluation council was established under the decision of the standing vice chairman of the Hanoi Energy Efficiency Programme Board. After receiving the dossiers and applications of facilities registered during the second and third quarters of 2021, the council would rank them and then submit them to the Standing Committee of the Programme Board (led by the director of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade) for certification. Green Energy Model certifications will be handed over in the fourth quarter.

The certificate’s validity period is within three years. Accordingly, facilities and buildings recognised under the Green Energy Model will be honoured widely on public media and prioritised to participate in the city’s cooperation, industrial, and agricultural promotion activities. Moreover, they will also be considered for technical assistance to further improve energy efficiency or could join other competitions related to energy efficiency in Vietnam or the ASEAN region. The programme has mobilised and guided over 260 facilities to apply for this joint effort and handed over Green Energy Model certifications to 108 facilities, buildings, and constructions in the past years. In 2020, the IPDCC successfully provided technical support and advised four facilities to apply for the 2020 ASEAN Energy Award.
