23 December 2021 – The Electricity Regulatory Authority of Viet Nam (ERAV) of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH[1] co-hosted “Academy Day 2021” virtually today in Hanoi, to enhance research into and the widespread adoption of smart grids for the power network to capture renewable energy and support the development of the country’s Smart Grid Road Map.

Speakers were representatives from the National Load Dispatch Center (NLDC), national and international companies, and universities.Participants came from affiliated entities under the MOIT, the Vietnam Electricity, the National Load Dispatch Center, the Regional Load Dispatch Center, Power Corporations, power generation companies, power companies, the Vietnam Electrical Engineering Association, power construction consulting firms, other associations, research institutes, universities, international organisations, and private companies. The event offered opportunities to local and international university academics, research institutes and private companies to exchange knowledge and experience, matchmake and present their research results.

The Academy Day was part of the Smart Grids for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SGREEE) Project, which is jointly implemented by ERAV of the MOIT, and GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Within the framework of this year’s workshop, a close cooperation with the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) was established to achieve the greatest possible benefit for Viet Nam.

During the workshop, the speakers presented their research on smart grids, energy efficiency and the integration of variable renewable energy in Viet Nam, Germany and Denmark. The main topics were studies on the operation and control of rooftop solar power systems, voltage regulated distribution transformer, protocol of the shared data centers [LA3] [TTHGV4] and Danish experiences with energy communities. Discussions focused on how to create a favorable environment for smart gird research and support the authorities to modernise the power grid when more renewable energy sources will be connected.

Mr. Loui Algren – long-term advisor to the Danish Energy Partnership Program/DEA – said, “I’m happy that Denmark joined the Academy Day this year and hope that the Danish contribution inspired to solutions on how to reach Viet Nam’s ambitious target for net zero emissions in 2050.”

Mr. Markus Bissel – SGREEE Project Director – said, “Despite COVID 19, I’m pleased that our Academy Day is organised annually, so experts and researchers can discuss and study the latest research on smart grids, promoting innovations and applications of the issue in Viet Nam. The event is contributing to the country’s modern power grid and the development of its Smart Grid Road Map when Viet Nam witnesses a prompt increase of renewable energy penetration into the power network.”

“DEA and GIZ, as neighboring European states, have been supporting the Vietnamese government on energy-related topics for a long time. Through the close cooperation on this year’s event, therefore, both are leveraging synergies in order to use the financial resources as efficiently as possible,” Markus added.

Smart grid technologies not only allow the transmission of electricity but also increase levels of information and communication between the various system components, which can improve the reliability, security and efficiency of the power system. Therefore, the Government of Viet Nam signed Decision No. 1670 / QD-TTg on 8 November 2012, approving a strategy on developing Smart Grid in Viet Nam (in short: Smart Grid Road Map) after recognizing the great benefit in upgrading the national power transmission system. The country’s Road Map aims to improve the quality and reliability of the national power supply and to improve the efficient use of electricity.

To support the Vietnamese Government, GIZ – on behalf of the German Government – has implemented the SGREEE Project since 2017. Under the project, the “Smart Grid Viet Nam Knowledge Hub” http://smart-grid.vn/ was created as the country’s first public platform to share concepts, solutions, experience, development progress and official documents related to smart grid applications in the country. A Facebook group named “Smart Grid Viet Nam Network” https://www.facebook.com/groups/smartgridvn was set up for national and international experts to discuss and share their professional experience about smart grid solutions, its applications and trends in the country and worldwide. The group now has more than 850 members.
