To upgrade energy partnership, a delegation of the German Federal Ministry for Economy and Climate Action (BMWK), headed by Mr. Tobias Pierlings, Head of Division, External Economic Policy South and Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Oceania paid a visit to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City during June 10-12, 2024.
The focus of the visit is the planned upgrade of the energy partnership between MOIT and BMWK. The delegation acknowledged Vietnam’s abundant potential in renewable energy development and its strategic role in fostering a sound and sustainable energy transition in the region. A more comprehensive and broader partnership in the energy sector is expected to facilitate more intensive support for Viet Nam, with a larger scale of resources and at a higher political level.
The delegation also had a working session with leaders and officials of the Viet Nam Electricity (EVN). EVN appreciates the active support of the German government through GIZ in recent years, especially in the field of rooftop solar power as well as energy efficiency in power grids and industries. In the future, both sides wish to expand cooperation in various areas, such as legal framework for offshore wind projecs, energy efficiency measurement, and demand-side management.
As part of the visit, the BMWK delegation met with Ms. Michaela Baur, Country Director of GIZ Viet Nam, and Mr. Philipp Munzinger, Director of the GIZ Energy Support Program (GIZ ESP). The delegation received an overview of Viet Nam’s energy transition and the projects undertaken by GIZ ESP over the past decade to develop the Viet Nam’s renewable energy market, funded by the German Government.
The delegation concluded their trip in Hanoi with a close exchange with the Vietnam Energy Women Network (VEWN). Specifically, VEWN looks forward to more opportunities for its members to connect and exchange with the German and global communities of women professionals in the energy industry.
On June 12, the BMWK delegation will have one further working day in Ho Chi Minh City to meet with German enterprises in Viet Nam and participate in the workshop of the Energy Efficiency and Climate Club (EEC).
