“Biogas technology has been explored and applied in Vietnam since the 1960s. About 500,000 biogas plants have been constructed in the country to date, but most of them are small-scale (the capacity less than 50 m3) and do not have any grid connection.”

That is the opening of an article on biogas power development, published in the Biogas Journal as of Autumn 2020. The article first gave an overall scenario of biogas in Viet Nam, then explored some of the most common biogas technologies in the country to date, difficulties facing biogas projects and put forward several recommendations for sustainable biogas development in Viet Nam.

The author is Ms. Le Thi Thoa – Senior Officer of the Climate Protection through Sustainable Bioenergy Markets in Viet Nam (BEM) project, implemented by GIZ and the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority (EREA) – MOIT. The project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
